I was just out of college a few years and married to a man who supported me and my art in public, but was physically abusive in private. One Saturday morning I was so blue, I had thought about killing myself. I decided he was not worth it, and went into my basement studio to paint. I painted this in one day, from 9 am until midnight. I was so absorbed by my painting that I was in 'the zone' beyond any sense of time. I didn't get hungry nor thirsty. This painting was the best thing that emerged from that marriage. I tell my story so that others may learn that there is always an alternative to suffering at the hands of another.

The expression on my face was genuine at the time the photo was taken. I would soon finish college with a BA degree, the first of my immediate family to do so..

Love and blessings,

Brenda
